Gopher Tortoise

Gopher tortoises are a threatened species. They are a “Keystone” species because they dig burrows in the sandy soil that provide homes for many other animals. There are over 350 commensal species, some of which are also threatened, that depend on the gopher tortoise for survival. Gopher tortoises have lived on earth for nearly 2 million years.
